The Knicks were shockingly good on Sunday, knocking off the Miami Heat on the road in South Beach thanks to a big defensive effort. Don’t get used to hearing the words “big defensive effort” thrown together in the same sentence all that much from New York, as the 86 points allowed to Miami was a tremendous statistical anomaly that will not be seen all that often. For the third straight game since coming to the Big Apple, Carmelo Anthony came up large, scoring 29 points and hauling in nine boards. Chauncey Billups hit the big time shots down the stretch when he needed to, and Amare Stoudemire chipped in as well. Though both only had 16 points, there was definitely enough offense there to win the game. Stoudemire also had the monster block on LeBron James that essentially ended the game. It appears as though the rotation that Head Coach Mike D’Antoni is going to use won’t be all that deep, as it is clear that ‘Melo, Billups, and Stoudemire are going to all play 35 minutes each and every night. Landry Fields has been called upon quite a bit, as has Shawne Williams, both of which have been starters for the most part.

The Magic have strung two wins together against relatively inferior foes since getting beaten down by the Sacramento Kings just before the NBA’s trade deadline. The team is now 4-2 both SU and ATS on this seven game home stand, which wraps up tonight. However, Orlando doesn’t leave the Sunshine State until March 9th, as the only road game before that is at Miami on Thursday. The best news in the world for Head Coach Stan Van Gundy and General Manager Otis Smith is that Gilbert Arenas finally showed some signs of life in the win over the Charlotte Bobcats. He scored 16 points in 17 minutes played, and if he can give the Magic even half of that production each and every night in those types of minutes, no one will be complaining. This is as healthy as the team is going to be, meaning that this is an Orlando team which really had better bring it every night, as many in the Sunshine State feel as though this is a championship caliber squad. Dwight Howard does have plenty of double digit scoring options at his disposal now, but only time will tell whether all of those options will be able to come together to beat the best teams in the East.

The Knicks had their day in Miami. Now, it’s time for them to succumb to the pressures of playing on the road, especially in the Sunshine State swing. The Magic will get their groove on once and for all this week and close out this home stand in a big time way.
