Novak Djokovic was victorious in his quarterfinal match at the Australian Open, beating opponent, and seventh overall seed Kei Nishikori in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, setting up a meeting with Rodger Federer in the Semifinal of the Grand Slam tournament.
Djokovic played a much cleaner match this time around against Nishikori, having only 27 unforced errors, as opposed to the 100 he made in the previous match of the tournament.
With the semifinal matchup against Federer coming up, tennis fans will be treated to one of the premiere rivalries in the sport today. This is the 3rd straight major tournament that Djokovic and Federer will face off at, although in this case a round earlier. Djokovic and Federer met in the finals of both the U.S Open and Wimbledon, with Djokovic achieving victory in both of those matches.
Despite that success, Federer managed to beat Djokovic 3 times over the course of 2015, a year in which Djokovic only lost a total of 6 matches.
Federer appears to be playing some incredible tennis. As he prepares for his match against Djokovic, he has dropped only a single set in the tournament so far, and won his quarterfinal round in straight sets.
Djokovic has nothing but respect for Federer, and was asked about the upcoming matchup after his victory in the quarterfinal match.
“It’s obvious that he’s a very complete player,” Djokovic said. “He’s trying lately to come to the net more, kind of shorten up the rallies. I mean, he definitely has the game for that. He’s got a great variation from the backhand side with the slice, short slice. He’s got great defense, amazing offense. He’s very complete. He puts constant pressure on the opponent. You have to be aware at all times. You got to be tough. You got to be concentrated.”
This matchup has become the premiere match in tennis over the last few years, in partas a result of other top player Rafael Nadal has been sidelined and hampered by injuries.
This will be the first meeting between Federer and Djokovic in a major tournament this year, and based on what we have seen in recent times between the 2 players, we are in for an incredible match between 2 of the most talented players that the tennis world has ever seen.
It’s hard to imagine the winner of this match not advancing to the finals and finding themselves as the Australian Open Championship, so this semifinal matchup may be the best game of the tournament.
