Johnny Manziel connected with Travis Benjamin on two long touchdown passes giving the Browns a 28-14 win over Marcus Mariota and the Tennessee Titans. Benjamin also returned a punt 78 yards for a TD in the first half as the Browns (1-1) built a 21-0 lead and hung on for just their third home-opening win since 1999.
Billed as a matchup of Heisman Trophy winners, Manziel finished his day completing eight of 15 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Mariota finished 21 of 37 for 257 yards with two touchdowns.
Manziel was starting in place of Brown’s quarterback Josh McCown who was not cleared to practice this week after suffering a concussion in last week’s game.
The Browns jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter after and that Isaiah Crowell 11 yard run. Benjamin, who finished with 269 all-purpose yards, then made it 21-0 with his electrifying return.
The Browns are expected to use Manziel as a backup once McCown is cleared and healthy and ready to play.
The Browns will host the Oakland Raiders next week in Cleveland and the Tennessee Titans Will host the Indianapolis Colts both games begin at 1 PM Eastern standard Time.
