Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida is the place for golf fans to be every March as the unofficial “Fifth Major” tees off at the prestigious TPC at Sawgrass.
The luckiest fans will find a spot around Island Green, the course’s famous 17th hole that has changed the leaderboard and broken hearts too many times to count.
Commonly referred to simply as “The Players”, the tournament now boasts the largest winners’ purse in golf after increasing the amount to $12.5 million this year. The Players champion will pocket a cool $2.25 million of that purse.
The top 50 male golfers in the world, as listed in the Official World Golf Rankings, are invited to be part of the 144 player field loaded with ex-champions and defending champions from all the major golf tournaments.
The Players is not listed as part of the European Tour, but usually, the top 50 players will cross the ocean to bask in the Florida sunshine.
Tiger Woods is expected to return from a one-week hiatus taken to rest a nagging neck strain. He will try to cap his career comeback by matching Jack Nicklaus as the only three-time Players Champion. Woods previously took the title in 2001 and 2013.
Only three other players have won twice at Sawgrass.
How to watch the live stream action of the Players Championship
NBC Sports Gold will carry the entire Players Championship live to fans in the United States and Canada. There will also be coverage of some of the surrounding festivities.
Subscribers to Amazon Prime Video will find the tournament there, too.
Sky Sports will dedicate a web page to continuous coverage of the Players throughout the tournament. Fans in much of the British Empire can take advantage of their coverage.
The Golf Channel app and the PGA app will provide live stream coverage from TPC at Sawgrass, too. The apps are available on Google Play or the App Store.
Official Broadcasters of the Players Championship
NBC is the official broadcaster of the Players Championship tournament. NBC owns the Golf Channel and will use that channel to show six hours of live coverage of each of the first and second rounds.
NBC’s flagship network will take over the live tournament coverage on Saturday and Sunday. The Golf Channel will be live from the course before and after NBC’s broadcast with highlights and interviews.
Across the pond and down under, Sky Sports will show live tournament action each day. There are several other broadcast options across Europe. Check the local listings if you happen to be over there.
How to watch the Players without cable
Over the Top (internet) television providers are quickly increasing in popularity, and why not? They offer an affordable and risk-free option to expensive cable and satellite companies without lengthy contracts and ugly equipment.
NBC, NBC Sports, and the Golf Channel will get you all the action from the 2019 Players Championship. For NBC, you’ll need local network access from your internet provider. But NBC Sports and even the Golf Channel can be found in most channel packages.
This makes Fubo TV a fine option for Players Championship fans. NBC and the Golf Channel are included in their basic Fubo channel selection ($45/month) as well as Fubo Extra. You also get 30 hours of DVR time included in that price in case you are not home for the first rounds.
Sling TV includes NBC Sports in its blue package ($25) or combined Blue-Orange grouping ($40). But if you want to catch the early rounds on the Golf Network, you’ll have to cough up an extra $10 for Sling’s Sports Extra add-on. DVR time costs extra, too.
DirecTV Now lets you watch NBC on every package of channels (starting at $40/month). But you won’t find the Golf Channel unless you spring for the Go Big ($65) or Gotta Have It ($75) bundles. For those prices, you get 20 hours of DVR space before additional fees kick in.
PlayStation Vue’s multiple channel groups each include NBC, including their most basic Access selection at $40/month. For the Golf Channel, you have to bump up a notch to the Core ($45) or higher. PlayStation lets you record up to 500 shows for the same price and you can watch on up to five devices.
YouTube TV only has one channel bundle. Fortunately, the $45/month subscription fee includes NBC and the Golf Channel, as well as unlimited DVR capacity.
Following on Social Media
The Golf Channel will provide constant highlights, comments, and the leaderboard on their Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit pages. Using the Hashtag #The Players will help.
The Players has their own social media pages, too where you can follow much of the action.
Anything can happen in a field of 144 champion-caliber golfers over 72 holes. One thing that probably won’t happen is that American Webb Simpson wins.
Never has a golfer successfully defended a Players Championship. The legendary Jack Nicklaus won three of the first five tournaments, but he won one every other year.
Since then, at least 6 years have separated repeat championships, with Steve Elkington’s 1991 and 1997 titles setting the standard.
So you’ll have to settle down in front of your favorite broadcast or internet television viewing device and follow the action to see who comes away with the 2019 players Championship.
Now that you know how.
